Best things to do in Ettalong Beach
Ettalong Beach
Ettalong Beach is calm, shallow and family-friendly – ideal for paddling, swimming, stand-up paddleboarding and kayaking. The gentle, protected waters make it perfect for young children learning to swim.
Important note: Although the water is generally calm and shallow, Ettalong Beach is not patrolled by lifeguards. If you prefer a patrolled beach, Umina Beach (a 3 km walk or short drive) is patrolled from late September through to April.
Facilities: A playground is located right on the beachfront with picnic tables, BBQ facilities and public toilets. For food, drinks and coffee, there’s a takeaway beach kiosk at The BOX on the Water.
Parking: Available along the Esplanade, with undercover parking also available at the Mantra Ettalong Beach on the beachfront.
Walk up Blackwall Mountain
The Blackwall Mountain Lookout walk is a 6km circular walk from the Ettalong Oval with great views of Ettalong from the top of the mountain. There’s quite a bit of uphill walking (and a bit of scrambling up rocks) to get to the lookout at the top. This walk is best suited for adults and older children – not suitable for young kids and prams due to steep and rocky sections. It is dog-friendly and there’s an enclosed dog park at the start of the walk at Ettalong Oval.
Personal note: The track can be a little confusing – we took a few wrong turns – so it helps to use an app (like AllTrails) with a map to help you stay on course.

Walk along the Esplanade to Umina Beach
The walk from Ettalong Beach to Umina Beach is a flat walk of around 3.4 km along the Esplanade, finishing at the Umina Surf Life Saving Club. There you’ll find a little cafe with some outdoor tables for a coffee or cold drink. You are then right on the gorgeous Umina Beach – perfect for a quick dip to cool down before your walk back.
Umina Beach is patrolled from late September through to April. Umina Beach is larger than Ettalong, with a bigger surf (though still relatively gentle) and more beach space. It’s worth the walk if you want variety or prefer a patrolled beach for swimming.

Visit The Galleria
The Galleria is an undercover Italian-themed market and village which includes boutique retail shops, restaurants and cafes, plus a cinema (Cinema Paradiso). The cinema is definitely worth a visit for the atmosphere alone.
There’s a huge range of food options, including Japanese, Italian, seafood, Indian, as well as coffee shops and bakeries. MamiGato is a great option for takeaway donuts and brioche (check out their Instagram to see what’s in store!). The Galleria makes a good rainy-day option, with undercover shopping and dining keeping the family entertained when the weather doesn’t cooperate.
Local’s tip: The Galleria is only open on weekends and public holidays. Although you can walk through the precinct on weekdays, you’ll find there’s nothing open. Cinema Paradiso is open during the week.
Explore the nearby towns and beaches
There are loads of nearby towns and beaches worth a visit: Killcare is great for a lunch with a view, Killcare Beach is great for a swim and meander around the rockpools, and Avoca Beach is only a 20 minute drive away for cafes, restaurants and beach swimming.

Where to eat and drink in Ettalong Beach
Ettalong Beach’s restaurant and cafe scene offers quality dining options despite its small size. While you won’t find the variety of larger towns like Terrigal, what’s here is excellent value with a relaxed, family-friendly atmosphere.
- Lunch with a view: The BOX on the Water
- Casual pub: The Ettalong
- Italian: Amalfi
- Friendly breakfast: The Exchange
- Asian-fusion: Tiger Mama
The BOX on the Water: small plates $21 – $28, large plates $32 – $46
The BOX on the Water is the pick of the Ettalong Beach dining options. It’s situated right on the beach, with great views across the water. The menu is mainly share plates and also comes with matching wine recommendations.
There are both outdoor and indoor tables and also a beach kiosk next door with takeaway food for a picnic on the beach. Booking is recommended, particularly on weekends.
Personal note: The menu does change seasonally but our favourites when we last visited were the fresh prawns, skagen donut (a savoury donut with prawns and lumpfish roe – sounds strange but tastes amazing!) and the crispy skinned salmon.

The Ettalong: mains $24 – $46
The Ettalong has a great friendly coastal vibe and is open 7 days for lunch and dinner. There’s indoor seating, plus a beer garden for a beer in the sun. The menu features Aussie pub classics like wings, steaks, schnitzels, tacos and burgers, plus some healthier options like salads and Harissa Chicken. There’s a kid’s menu.
Local’s tip: It can get busy at times (like Trivia Tuesday!) but it’s big enough that you can usually find a table and you can book in advance to be sure you can get your beer and schnitzel fill!
Amalfi: mains $29 – $44
Amalfi offers both indoors and outdoors dining options with friendly staff and delicious Italian food. There’s an extensive menu, from starters (like bruschetta, burrata, prawns), through raw options (think oysters, tuna tartare and steak tartare), pastas and mains. Our favourites were the anchovy bruschetta, the prawn pasta and the pappardelle con ragu. There is also a kid’s menu available, for kids under 10, with simple pasta options.
The restaurant does get booked out so we’d recommend booking in advance, particularly if you have a preference for sitting indoors or outdoors.
The Exchange: breakfast $18 – $28
A couple of blocks back from the beach you’ll find The Exchange, a friendly local cafe with great service, excellent coffee and generous breakfasts. The highlight was the smashed crab “omelette” but there’s also plenty of simpler options including breakfast rolls and eggs benedict.
Ettalong Diggers
The Diggers is the local Ettalong RSL. This is a huge establishment with multiple bars and food options. Great casual spot to sit outside on the covered terrace with a cold beer on a hot day. If you are on a budget there are theme nights with cheaper food options – like Tuesday pizza night with $20 pizzas.
Tiger Mama: mains $21 – $39
Just a 2-minute walk from the beach, Tiger Mama serves Asian-fusion cuisine in a relaxed, family-friendly setting. The atmosphere and service are friendly and the food is fresh and delicious with generous servings. Highlights are the handmade dumplings, the bao buns and the duck pancake platter. For families travelling with kids there are good options (like the chicken fried rice) that are not too spicy. For the budget-conscious, keep an eye out for the daily specials (like 50% off Gyoza on Wednesdays).
Where to stay in Ettalong Beach
Ettalong Beach accommodation consists mainly of holiday houses and apartments. For hotel/motel style accommodation there are a few options.
Mantra Ettalong Beach
This is one of the most prominent landmarks along Ettalong Beach, with its tiered multi-storey structure. It’s a 4-star hotel with a great central pool and fantastic views from most rooms. Our room was clean, well-sized and comfortable with a great view across the pool to the beach.

Ettalong Beach Tourist Resort
This motel is part of The Galleria and is an affordable option with different-sized rooms and family suites. It’s a short walk to the beach, has an outdoor pool on the first level and has loads of dining options when The Galleria is open on weekends.
NRMA Ocean Beach Holiday Resort
This caravan park and family holiday resort is in nearby Umina, around a 10 minute drive from Ettalong. As well as caravan, camping and glamping sites, the resort offers a range of 2 and 3 bedroom cabins, all equipped with a kitchen and an outdoor dining area. This is a great self-catering option – particularly if you are on a budget. The resort is right on the beach and also has two resort-style pools.
Best time to visit Ettalong Beach
- Summer: peak beach season, the warm water is perfect for kids. Busy on weekends and during school holidays.
- Autumn: still warm enough for swimming, fewer crowds after school returns, perfect for beach walks.
- Spring: warming up, good for playground time and beach walks, less crowded than summer.
- Winter: quiet beaches and off-season rates, too cold for most swimmers but great for rugged up beach walks.

What Ettalong Beach isn’t
Ettalong isn’t a fine dining destination – for a selection of upscale restaurants and sophisticated dining, you’ll want to visit Terrigal 25 minutes north or book at Bells at Killcare. It’s also not as scenic or dramatic as some Central Coast spots – there’s no iconic headland walk like Terrigal’s Skillion, though what Ettalong lacks in Instagram-worthy landmarks, it makes up for in family-friendly facilities and calm swimming. Ettalong isn’t a nightlife destination – the town winds down early, making it perfect for families with young children who need early nights.
Ettalong Beach also isn’t a surf beach – the calm, protected waters that make it perfect for young kids mean there are no waves for surfing. For surf, head to nearby Terrigal Beach or Avoca Beach.
How to get to Ettalong Beach from Sydney
Driving – 1.5 hours
Ferry – The Palm Beach to Ettalong ferry takes 30 minutes, with approximately 7 services daily on weekends and additional early morning ferries on weekdays. There’s parking available near the wharves but this fills up quickly so it’s best to get there early to ensure you find a park. Tickets are $15.10 for adults and $7.55 concession. Timetables do change in adverse weather conditions so be sure to check in advance and sign up to the SMS alert service if you are not sure.
Train – Train to Woy Woy station (approx. 1 hour 20 from Central) then bus or taxi to Ettalong Beach. Once in Ettalong Beach, the beach and main cafes are walkable. You’ll want a car for visiting Terrigal, Killcare or other nearby beaches.
Local travel tip
Dining options are more limited than in Terrigal, so during peak summer and school holidays, book ahead at places like The BOX on the Water and Amalfi to avoid missing out.
