Batemans Bay Travel Guide: Seafood, Beaches & River Escapes
Last updated
A sunny day in Batemans Bay might see you wandering along the gorgeous waterfront, eating oysters fresh from the farm gate, or kayaking on the calm Clyde River. The seaside town is one of the closest coastal options to Canberra (around 2 hours) but takes a little more commitment for Sydneysiders (around 3.5 to 4 hours).
This Batemans Bay travel guide covers the best things to do, where to eat and drink, where to stay and how to make the most of your stay.
Next Escape is your guide to real places and real experiences, with honest, practical, independent travel advice based on first-hand visits: the beaches we’ve swum at, the restaurants we’ve eaten at, the walks we’ve actually done. Best things to do in Batemans Bay
Buy oysters fresh from the “farm gate”
The Oyster Shed on Wray is a small, unpretentious shed on the banks of the Clyde River selling fresh oysters and prawns. There’s a seating area outside to eat them right away, or you can buy them (either opened or unopened) to take away.
The Oyster Shed is located on the northern side of the Clyde River Bridge, making it an ideal stop on your way into Batemans Bay if travelling from Sydney or Canberra. There’s also a separate little cafe next door with coffees, toasties and other food options if anyone in your party isn’t as keen on seafood.

The Sculpture Walk
The Sculpture Walk is a waterfront walk from the Clyde River Bridge to Batehaven passing a range of sculptures. Spotting the sculptures is a great way to anchor a walk that’s lovely in its own right. The walk is mainly along the waterfront, although there is a final sculpture up towards Batehaven. A new sculpture is added each year when the Acquisitive Award winner is permanently installed along the route (check the official website for the most up-to-date route map).
Personal note: To refuel along the way, JJ’s at the Marina is an excellent stop for coffee, fresh juice, lunch or just to take in the views across the water. They also have happy hour in the afternoons from Tuesday to Friday so you can enjoy a cocktail in the sun if the timing works.
Kayak the Clyde River
There is a range of guided kayak tours on the Clyde River, including glass-bottom kayak tours, an oyster-tasting experience with a fourth-generation oyster farming family and a sunset pizza kayak, where pizza is actually delivered to your kayak out on the water. Kayak and stand-up paddleboard hire is also available by the hour or full day if you would prefer to explore independently.
All are available to book on Viator or GetYourGuide.
Have a beach day
There are several good beaches near Batemans Bay, including:
- Corrigans Beach: dog-friendly beach just a couple of minutes south of Batemans Bay. A walk along this beach is a good option to round off your Sculpture Walk.
- A little further south, Casey’s Beach is great for swimming and picnics.
- Surf Beach is further south again (7 km from Batemans Bay) and is a busy but lovely beach with a cafe and playground.
Check the beachsafe website for patrol times.
Take a River Cruise from Innes Boatshed
For a more relaxed option, Innes Boatshed operates a three-hour lunchtime river cruise up the Clyde River, with lunch served on board. It is a leisurely way to see the river if you would rather not paddle, and the lunchtime serving of fish and chips from the Boatshed is very good.
Explore the surrounding area
Batemans Bay is on a beautiful part of the coast and there is plenty to see within a short drive:
- Head to Observation Point Lookout on the other side of Batehaven. This is a short drive (less than 10 minutes) and if you are feeling energetic then you can also tack it onto the end of the Sculpture Walk, making it around 5 km each way. The views are gorgeous and this is a great spot for whale watching in season (May to November).
- Take a day trip to the small town of Mogo (a 15-minute drive) for antique shops, cafes and boutique stores, plus Mogo Wildlife Park, which is particularly good for families.
- Visit Murramarang National Park for beaches (including Pebbly Beach and Pretty Beach), walks and kangaroos.
Where to eat and drink in Batemans Bay
Seafood is the clear priority here. Fresh oysters, fish and prawns are on almost every menu, and several restaurants have excellent outdoor settings overlooking the water.
- Waterfront dining: Water’s Edge
- Fish and chips: Innes Boatshed
- Mussels by the water: JJ’s at the Marina
- Central location with a view: Starfish
- Bar and bistro: Soldiers Club
Water’s Edge
Tucked behind Orient Street on the waterfront and easy to miss from the road, but worth finding. The seafood was our favourite, particularly the fresh oysters and the butter-poached lobster tail. Open daily for lunch and dinner with indoor and outdoor seating options.
JJ’s at the Marina
Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner with excellent views over the marina. The steamed black mussels, served with house-made sourdough in a range of flavour combinations, are the standout dish. There is also a happy hour from Tuesday to Friday afternoons with bar snacks.
Innes Boatshed
The local go-to for fish and chips, with very fresh seafood. You can eat in the small seating area, or take your lunch across to the nearby Foreshore Park. The three-hour lunchtime river cruise departs from here and, with fish and chips included on board, this is a good option if you want to combine lunch with a bit of river sightseeing.
Starfish
Centrally located on the waterfront and good for families or groups. The seafood and pizzas are the picks on the menu, and it is a lovely spot to sit outside with a glass of wine after lunch.
Soldiers Club
A large club with a bar and bistro, free pool and darts. The meals are solid and affordable. Not a fine dining experience, but a good option for a relaxed, low-key evening.

Where to stay in Batemans Bay
Most of the best accommodation in Batemans Bay is on or near the waterfront, which is where you want to be. A few favourites from our visits are below and you can also check Booking.com and Stayz for a full range.
Bay Breeze Boutique Accommodation
Right on the waterfront with sea views and spacious rooms. One of the better options in town for a comfortable overnight stay, and in an excellent location.
Personal note: This is our favourite in Batemans Bay – the rooms are gorgeous and the views from the balcony are even better. There are different room types available so if possible, try to get one with sea views.

A clean, no-fuss option on the waterfront. Good value if you want a straightforward place to stay close to everything.

The Esplanade Motel
Clean and recently renovated, with good views from the balconies. Well positioned on the waterfront and right across from the Soldiers Club.

What Batemans Bay isn’t
Batemans Bay is not a boutique town. The main commercial strip is fairly basic and the activities are focused on getting out into nature – whether it’s on the water or out in the nearby Murramarang National Park. It’s also not a nightlife destination and things tend to close quite early.
What it does well is unpretentious coastal living: fresh seafood, river activities and a relaxed pace.
How to get to Batemans Bay
From Sydney – Around 3.5-4 hours (driving), 288 km via the Princes Highway. Berry or Kiama make an ideal lunchtime stop to break up the journey.
From Canberra – Around 2 hours (driving), 148 km via the Kings Highway. Stop in at Braidwood (the first entire town heritage-listed in NSW) along the way.
