Bowral or Berry: Where Should You Stay?

Compare two of NSW’s favourite village escapes to choose the right base for your next weekend away.
Last updated
Bowral and Berry have a lot of similarities: both are fantastic destinations for a village weekend within driving distance from Sydney and both have great accommodation options, boutique shopping and excellent dining. However, depending on how you want to fill your weekend, they can make for quite different experiences. Bowral is the larger town, with more accommodation and dining choices, cool-climate gardens and the wider Southern Highlands on its doorstep. Berry is smaller and easier to cover on foot, with boutique shopping, a good dining range for a full weekend and the coast only a short drive away.
Berry is slightly further from Sydney, around 2 hours drive, compared to Bowral which is around 1 hour and 30 minutes.
We have found Bowral to be the more flexible all-round base, particularly if you want a broad choice of hotels, restaurants, wineries and nearby towns. Berry suits travellers who want a compact village weekend with long lunches, shopping and the option to spend part of the trip at Seven Mile Beach, Gerringong or Kiama.

Why visit Bowral or Berry?
Bowral and Berry both deliver the village atmosphere you want from a weekend away from Sydney: easily walkable streets, independent boutique shops, good food and country scenery. Bowral has the scale and variety of a regional hub, with gardens, museums, wineries and several surrounding Southern Highlands towns. Berry is more compact, with Queen Street at the centre and beaches, wineries and Kangaroo Valley all within driving distance.
Your decision comes down to the kind of setting you want around the village itself. Bowral gives you more dining and accommodation choice plus the opportunity to explore nearby national parks and other Southern Highlands towns. Berry gives you a smaller village experience with the coast close enough for a beach walk or swim.

Bowral or Berry: accommodation
Bowral has the broader range, from country manor hotels and central motels to boutique stays, cottages and holiday houses. Several hotel-style choices have restaurants or bars on-site, and there are options within walking distance of Bong Bong Street as well as quieter stays just outside town.
Berry accommodation leans towards country houses, cottages and self-contained stays, with a smaller collection of inns and motels close to Queen Street. The village can book out on popular weekends, so Berry generally needs more forward planning if you want a particular property or accommodation within walking distance of the village.
Our pick: Bowral for the widest choice of accommodation styles; Berry for a cottage-style stay or a smaller village base.

Bowral or Berry: cafés and restaurants
Bowral has more restaurant choice across a wider range of styles. Bistro Sociale and Lucette are great for a long lunch or dinner, Franquette Crêperie is perfect for crêpes any time of day, and nearby wineries also give you the option of a tasting and lunch outside town.
Berry has plenty of dining for a two-night weekend, despite its smaller size. South on Albany is an excellent option for a special occasion, while The Garden, Milkwood Bakery and Berry General Store are all ideal for more casual meals. The Great Southern Hotel and Berry Hotel also give you the option of a relaxed pub meal, and the Donut Van is an easy stop between shops.
Our pick: Bowral for the widest dining choice; Berry for a compact weekend where cafés, restaurants and shops sit close together.

Bowral or Berry: surrounding region and day trips
Bowral sits within the Southern Highlands region. Day trips to wineries, Berrima, Mittagong, Bundanoon or the lookouts around Mount Gibraltar can all easily fit into the same weekend without it feeling too rushed.
Berry gives you two landscapes within one stay, with Seven Mile Beach and coastal towns Gerringong and Kiama nearby. For a weekend stay, it works well to explore the village in the morning, head to the nearby beach for the afternoon and then return for the village dining.
Our pick: Bowral for a country and wine-focused region; Berry for easy access to both countryside and coast.

Bowral or Berry: which has more things to do?
Bowral has more variety within the town and its immediate surrounds. Corbett Gardens, the Bradman Museum, antique and boutique shopping, the Cherry Tree Walk, Mount Gibraltar and nearby wineries comfortably fill a weekend. For a day trip from Bowral, Berrima is a lovely historic village only a short drive away.

Berry is more about a slower-paced weekend. Queen Street shopping, the heritage walk, cafés, the Donut Van and nearby wineries fill the village part of the trip, while Seven Mile Beach, Gerringong or Kiama add the option for a beach walk or swim.
Our pick: Bowral if you want more activities without leaving the Southern Highlands; Berry if you want to combine the village with a coastal or countryside day trip.

Bowral or Berry: for a first-time visit
Bowral is the easier first choice if you want plenty of accommodation and dining options plus several activities to fill the weekend. Berry is a better fit when the smaller scale is part of the appeal and you want a quieter weekend with the option of adding a beach walk or coastal drive.

Bowral or Berry: for couples
Both work well for couples. Bowral suits a hotel stay, winery visits, gardens and booked dinners. Berry suits a self-catering cottage stay with shopping, café breakfasts and an easy drive to the beach.

Bowral or Berry: for families
Berry has a slight edge for younger families because Boongaree Nature Play Park and the nearby beaches add easy options beyond the shops and cafés. Bowral works better for older children who may enjoy the Bradman Museum, gardens and walks.

Bowral or Berry: for groups
Bowral is the easier base for groups that want a mix of hotels, cottages, wineries and restaurants. Berry also has larger holiday houses and works well for smaller groups focused on shopping, dining and a relaxed village weekend.
Can I visit Bowral and Berry on the same trip?
Yes, but they are around 60 km and just over an hour apart by car, so we would not treat one as a quick outing from the other. They work better as part of a longer trip, such as our five-day NSW Villages road trip.
Choose Bowral if:
- You want the widest choice of accommodation and restaurants
- You want gardens, wineries and several nearby towns to explore
- You prefer a larger town with more options if the weather changes
- Your group wants a mix of hotels, dining and wine experiences
Choose Berry if:
- You want a smaller village that is easy to explore on foot
- Boutique and homewares shopping is a priority
- You want cafés and restaurants concentrated around one compact centre
- You want Seven Mile Beach and the coast close by
- You prefer cottage-style accommodation and a slower pace
Our verdict: Bowral or Berry
For the most flexible first weekend, we would choose Bowral. The larger accommodation and dining range makes planning easier, and the wider Southern Highlands gives you more options for a day trip.
Berry is the better choice when you specifically want a smaller village weekend, with Queen Street shopping and dining at the centre and the coast close enough to add a beach walk or swim. Both deliver the country-town atmosphere, but Bowral feels like a regional base while Berry feels like a compact village break.
