One of the busiest airports in Europe, Frankfurt International Airport is the main hub for the German flagship carrier Lufthansa. There is no problem finding a flight from Frankfurt to London and other major cities in the UK. No other airport in continental Europe handles more passenger traffic than Frankfurt, and once passengers disembark, they can make use of two underground railway systems, an aerial tram, and taxis, making getting around a snap.

Frankfurt is the center of Germany’s financial world, as well as home to a booming metropolitan area. Frankfurt is the site of the Bundesbank, the European Central Bank, and the largest Stock Exchange in Europe, adding to the city’s reputation as a financial powerhouse. Transport and trade also play major roles in Frankfurt’s economy. In addition, Frankfurt is also a center for media companies, with thousands employed in the advertising and public relations industries. Frankfurt also has the highest concentration of lawyers in all of Germany, with one lawyer for every 99 Frankfurt residents.

Some of the tallest buildings in Europe can be found in Frankfurt. Like much of Germany, Frankfurt was heavily bombed during World War II, sustaining major damage that was eventually rebuilt in a simple style common during Germany’s reconstruction. Frankfurt was also the headquarters for the United States Army during the war.

UK Visitors to Frankfurt will want to travel to the Main River to see the Museumsufer, center with- major museums devoted to natural history, applied arts, German architecture, and Jewish history. Frankfurt also hosts a thriving art and cultural scene.

When you are out seeing the sites in Frankfurt, first look for the Zeil, the city’s main shopping area. Then you will want to see the Frankfurt Opera House, the Old Opera House, St. Katherine’s Church Roemer City Hall, St. Bartholomeus’ Cathedral, and Frankfurt’s own St. Paul’s.

Frankfurt is also known around the world for its literary scene. The most celebrated writer in the German language, Wolfgang Goethe, once called Frankfurt home, and the city’s Frankfurt school was made famous by philosopher Theodor Adorno and others. Each year in October it hosts the Frankfurt Book Fair, a legendary trade event for book publishers from almost every country. The Book Fair celebrates its sixtieth anniversary in 2009.

A major festival in the city is the Museums Riverbank Festival, which attracts more than three million visitors over a three day period. It takes place at the end of August on both sides of the Main Riverbank in the city centre. More than 20 museums are located there, and the museums keep special late hours during the festival. There are also special attractions like music, dance shows, several booths for crafts, jewelry, clothes and food from all around the world. It ends with a spectacular firework display.

The oldest folk festival in Frankfurt, however, is the Festival of Stoneware. This semi-annual takes place twice a year around Easter and at the end of September. Find it in the eastern part of the city.
