It is thought that Aboriginal Australians were living along the length of the vicinity we recognise as the Queensland Gold Coast for over 22,000 before settlement by the early European arrivals. The location widely known as Mermaid Beach was in fact one of the first locations of the Gold Coast That where settled by Europeans. It had been titled after the explorer John Oxley whose ship, referred to as The Mermaid, landed on this beach in 1823. It should be documented that the very first Europeans would likely first have looked at the area when Captain Cook voyaged along the Eastern coast of Queensland during 1770.
