You may, or may not, have heard about, but there is a way to hire vehicles for as low as $1 per day in Australia, and in this post I will share how you can get onto these deals.

In Australia there are loads of small car rental companies and several large national network vehicle rental companies with offices in most major cities. Everyday these rental companies are renting vehicles out on one way rentals where a car can go from one city and be returned back to a depot in another city.

For some companies this is no big deal they just keep it at that depot for the next person that wants that type of car, when it will be hired out and driven to another city. For everyday rental vehicles which the company has a lot of, this is no problem. But when it’s a specialised vehicle in short supply, then it may need to be transferred back to the originating city or to another destination where there’s it’s been booked for hire.

Apollo is quite popular for camper relocation deals

In many cases the hire car companies will simply hire a driver to transfer it or load it onto a car transporting truck that’s heading that way. But many companies are now offering heavily discounted hire for people going in that direction, this is called relocation rentals.

The most widely available type of vehicle available is the campervan, in the form of the people movers and small vans that are fitted out with beds and camping gear right through to the large custom motor homes.

The hire car companies will offer rates as low as one dollar per day and even include money for fuel. But there are some conditions, and you should check these clearly upon booking a relocation rental as each company may differ. Conditions may include a refundable booking fee, a credit card deposit which is refunded on vehicle return, and time limits on the hire.

The hire company will clearly state the time the vehicle needs to be returned by, by prior arrangement you may be able to extend the hire beyond the due dates but this will usually be charged at full rack rate. In the case there is no time extension available and you drop it off after the due date and time then you may be slugged with a penalty fee of double the rack rate.

Apart from the special price, it’s just like a normal rental in that you’ll be responsible for the vehicle. If you are in a crash, break a screen, damage or break anything you’ll need to pay for it. Some of the deals include insurance but some deals you may need to pay extra to have cover. Check the details.

Also note that with campervans they’ll often have no accessories (IE. cooking utensils, linen etc.) but you can hire them at extra cost.
