Formerly known as Spencer Street station, Southern Cross Station is located right in the CBD of Melbourne and provides a central point for departures and arrivals from the city.

From Southern Cross you can easily access trains heading to numerous destinations within Melbourne, within Victoria and across Australia. There’s three different rail services that operate from here which include  V/Line which services greater Victoria, MetLink which services Melbourne and Victoria in combination with V/Line, Country Link for services to Sydney and NSW and through to Brisbane, and the Great Southern Rail service which operates the Indian Pacific (Sydney-Adelaide-Perth), The Ghan (Adelaide-Alice Springs – Darwin), The Overland (Melbourne-Adelaide) and The Southern Spirit (2 Transcontinental Journeys).

There’s also bus services including FireFly which services Adelaide, Melbourne and Sydney. There’s Greyhound which has services right across Australia and local bus services by Sita Coaches and MetLink .

Theres also bus services between Tullamarine Airport via SkyBus which takes about 20 minutes and operates at regular intervals 24 hours a day. You can also get to and from Avalon Airport from Southern Cross Station via Sita Coaches which operates services to meet all arriving and departing flights.

Facilities at the station are excellent including a comfortable waiting room, plenty of seating, clean toilets and information services. There’s a small food court on the second level looking down on to the trains below and several other small cafes throughout the station. There’s also a starbucks and centrally located convenience store (like a mini supermarket) which also stocks travelers needs like power adapters. There’s also a small IGA supermarket directly across the road, at the corner of Spencer St and Collins St, which has packaged food, fresh fruit and and necessities.

There’s also plenty of lockers for left luggage at Southern Cross. The lockers vary in size and are available for hire periods of 24hours with costs ranging from 8-15AUD, the biggest lockers will fit two large suitcases, a couple of standard sized backpacks, and some other small handbags/shopping bags. The lockers are coin operated and you get a pin number which enables you to re-open the locker at any time.
