Brighton is one of the UK’s most visited seaside cities and it’s no surprise to fans of the city that it is sometimes referred to as London by the Sea. A vibrant and exciting place to be, Brighton manages to combine traditional seaside charm with fashionable city life and is a great place for families to visit.
It’s hard to be bored in Brighton and that’s just what lots of parents want from a family holiday – plenty to keep the children occupied. The beach at Brighton is an obvious place to visit on a good day and you will find lots of fairgrounds, arcades and other activities in the surrounding area. Also when the weather is good there are some great parks in Brighton with plenty of space to let the kids run around. The park closest to the West Pier has a paddling pool, which children can enjoy during the summer months.
Brighton’s Marina is a very busy and recently developed place that even has its’ own shopping centre. There are also lots of family friendly activities to join in on here. You could organize a boat trip or if the weather is not so good you can play virtual golf, indoor bowling or even go to see a film at the cinema. There is a good range of restaurants here from fast food chains to more substantial restaurants making it a good place for families to dine out.
England’s oldest cinema is also in Brighton and it has a great Saturday morning Kids Club. The Duke of York’s Picture house is a spectacular listed building and worth a visit on a rainy Saturday. There is also a children’s’ comedy club in Brighton called the Komedia Theatre and there are plenty of shows to go and see here that will have the kids laughing along.
There are lots of museums to choose from in Brighton with the Toy and Model Museum probably topping the list for a family visit. Described as an ‘Aladdin’s Cave’ of toys from around the world, old and new, the Toy Museum will keep the whole family interested. The Sealife Centre is another great place to visit, children are able to touch crabs and starfish in the open rock pools and there is a walk-through underwater tunnel that has sharks swimming around. Sealife is home to up to 150 different types of sea creature including rays, seahorses and giant turtles.
The Volk’s Electric Railway runs throughout summer along a route that starts at the Pier and ends up at the Marina. A pleasant ride with lovely views of the coast, this narrow gauge railway is the oldest electric railway in the world.
